With this, i'd go with the OBP. Simply put, it's more important to put people on to score, than to knock in runs. Which is more important, to the 1-3 in the lineup, than getting on for the cleanup hitter? It helps if your lineup has 2-3 guys that specialize in SLG numbers, but they can be handicapped by walks....that as well, pads your OBP.
A good example, is what Dave Winfield went through, down in San Diego. They would walk him all the time, because he was the only major hitter they had.

Depends on what you want from either one.

A point of OBP is more valuable than a point of SLG, especially at the league-leading level, because the leader in SLG is usually around .600-.650, whereas the top OBP guy not named Bonds is probably around .450-.475. It is harder to push one's OBP higher because each opportunity only counts for one, whereas SLG can accumulate up to four in the numerator at a time.

If I had 1000 points to distribute into one player, I'd probably make my third-place hitter something like .525 OBP / .475 SLG -- get him on base often and let some other .400/.600 guys can bring him around to score. Lotsa runs begets lotsa wins if the pitchers do their job.

they are both needed. One you got to be on base to score, the higher the slg. the better chance of scoring someone or setting yourself up to score.

I like the slugging percentage more as this is something that they do on their own. The on-base percentage depends greatly on bases-on-balls (wild pitcher) while hitting the ball is dependent on the individual batter.
