I'm a writer, and I want to start freelance writing. How would you go about doing that? Does anyone have any experience in this area?

Get a copy of Writers Market. Go to the back of the book and search through the magazines buying material. You can also try joining Absolute Write Water Cooler. They sometimes post freelance jobs. Dont expect to get rich at first. Many articles sell for 5 or 10 dollars. But they get your name out there. Pax - C

I don't profess to know the real answer to this question. But I would think if you send copies of your work to the publisher of publications that typically publish the type of things you write, you would immediately be a freelance writer. You can find the publishers to newspapers and magazines by googling the companies online.

By the way to be successful as a freelance writer, you need to become friends with spell check or proof your work well. It's touch to become a freelance writer if you have trouble correctly spelling the word "freelance" Good luck!

First off, you must know how to write well.

Second, you need to be able to express ideas clearly and succinctly, in a way that is compelling to readers. How you communicate with others, how well they understand you and how interested they seem in what you're saying is key. If you are lacking in this area, consider taking classes on communication or join an organization specializing in public speaking.

You need to have top notch research skills.

You need to possess strong inter-personal skills and organizational skills.

In order to get writing jobs, be prepared to submit samples of your writing.

Your best bet is to check with magazines about their submission policy. Many times if your items are good they will publish them and that can help start your portfolio. While it won't necessarily start bringing in a source of income right away it will give you experience in dealing with publishing entities.
