No its not but when animals feel the need to (you know what) they tend to get a little confused.
Also in some species a male doing it with another is a sign of dominance but no animals aren't really gay as in the human sense.

I think there is a "gay" pair of flamingos somewhere in a zoo. They gave them an egg to watch.
In the animal world though relationships are usually only for reproduction. Since humans have a higher level of consciousness and more needs from a relationship other that reproduction (companionship, understanding, compatibility, etc.) it is possible to have homosexuality because some people may find what they need in a relationship from someone of the same sex. Also, some people are attracted to the same sex. Animals usually base attraction on who would make the best mother/father and pheromones. Its much deeper and complex than that in the human realm.

Well I think so.. because humans are animals and there are gay humans. My cat is also a lesbian, she hates my male cat but she humps the other female cats when she is in heat. Considering the fact that 1)shes a female and they arent usually the ones to do the mounting, 2) there is a male cat present and she wants nothing to do with him, 3) she is a female who is sexually attracted to other females. It is pretty safe to conclude she is a lesbian.
Also in a study done on mice it was found that when they became overpopulated more and more mice became homosexual.. so there is some evidence that homosexual tendencies become desired traits when there is an overpopulation problem and that it is a natural process that helps to prevent more births in an overabundant species.

Same-sex pairs are sometimes noted in various animals, especially in birds - but the problem is that most studies aren't close enough to determine whether a pair is normal or same-sex. Perhaps the long-term primate studies would have some information on that. I expect that homosexuality is present (if rare) in many animals, but the information is mostly anecdotal.

I just read an article in the June issue of Australiasian Science that says that there are at least 450 species of birds that engage in homosexual behaviour. Apparently 4% of Australian Silver Gull chicks are reared by female-female pairs.

that depends on your definition of gay......if you mean can animals be born effeminate and pansified I doubt it. But if you mean do male animals go at each others bum Im sure they do. To me there is gay (effeminate) and homosexual (anal intruders), you need to sort out which word you are curious about.
