Are 1000px layouts safe for 1024x768 resolutions?

For my new website, I want to work with a larger resolution for my design (following suit with Yahoo, MTV etc) so I want to make sure 1000 isn't too large.

It's going to be tight, especially given the popularity of sidebars in today's browsers, but you could give it a whirl.

I think you should look at the code for Yahoo, MTV etc. before you set a fixed width site. None of those are fixed! Using variable widths allows much more flexible design and allows more users to see your site correctly.
