Tiger Direct:

Just under $300 (including Win Xp home and am 80Gb Hard drive) AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.80GHz Socket 939 OEM Processor and a 450W power supply.

The OS is $90 bucks so we are talking $210 for a slightly faster CPU, 2x Hard Drive size and a slightly more powerful power supply for $10 bucks more (No OS)

Sounds like an adequate system for her. I can say that unless you are planning on spending about $600-700 or more, then it is more efficient to buy a computer than build one ASSUMING that you need to buy the operating system too. Most people fail to include that cost in the equation.

Also a store bought computer will have a warranty where she can have it serviced at a store or at home depending on the type of warranty. That way she has someone to call (other than you) if anything happens.

If you do decide to build it tho...

1) Go with a Celeron or socket AM2 Sempron! You can then get DDR2 RAM instead of DDR which will not only be faster, but will also be 50% cheaper and not as obsolete.

2) Dont go too cheap on the motherboard either (*cough cough* ECS *cough* PC Chips *cough cough*). It may help alleviate a lot of problems down the road.

To expensive for what you get. I would buy one of www.Microcenter.com They have good deals. I don't Tiger Direct includes an Operating System. So you will have to Buy Windows Xp or Vista. Or you could go with Linux.

For what she's using it for that sounds good to me. I assume an operating system doesn't come with that price. If thats the case what did you have in mind?
