When I was out walking recently. I noticed a few black slugs crawling about on the ground, but I think their black colour will make them very conspicuous to peditors. Does anyone know what survival advantage they get from being black?

I'm sure that I'd read that the common garden slug has a bright orange version, but I've never seen one.

Don't think that there are many things that can eat slugs, the mucus contains chemicals that make many (all ?) animals vomit. Their colour could tied into this, maybe as a warning.

Could also be to do with temperature regulation. Black objects tend to warm up /cool down faster.(paradoxically it's why hot water radiators are usually painted white)

I hunt in lower Michigan which means no rifles.I use a Muzzleloader. Thompson Center makes the best Muzzleloaders out there. The only reason I would buy a Encore is for the interchangeable barrels. I would not get a Encore for a slug gun. It would be cheaper to buy a Remington 870 with a rifled barrel, plus you got 5 shots instead of a single shot. I miss sometimes. I would go with the Triumph for Muzzleloading. I use a Remington Genesis the price on those muzzleloaders are a really good deal.

Slugs are nocturnal.

All the glow-in-the-dark slugs were eaten by the now extinct nocturnal headlamp bird. The blackback slug, also known as yechh, didn't show up in the nocturnal headlamp bird's beam, and weren't eaten. Without a food source, the nocturnal headlamp bird starved out.

Yeah for natural selection.

Those bright orange slugs that you often see are actually the same species as the big glossy black ones. They are often refered to in nature books as "Great Black Slug (Orange Variety)".

Not all slugs are black. They come in almost white, yellow, green, brown, and black. As a creature that lives most of its life in leaf litter, and under fallen logs, the black would be an excelent color.

the black slug is mainly nocturnal hence the dark colour.

Many different coloured slugs and apparently the further north you go the darker the colours!

Maybe it camouflages them better when they are crawling on soil.
