The chances are good that he was abused by a man at some point. Horses have excellent memories, and they always remember who hurt and who was kind to them. Men are notorious ( at least some of the ones I have known) for mistreating and abusing horses. They think that it is the 'cowboy " or macho thing to do, to show an innocent animal "who's boss", or it is a case of the man not getting his own way with the animal and needing to prove that he's dominant. This often backfires, with unfortunate, and sometimes, tragic results. Kicking and biting are secondary defenses for most horses- their main defense when threatened is to run away. If your horse is kicking and biting when approached by a man, then chances are he feels threatened, even if the man isn't doing anything. It's a lot like what happens to a person who has been attacked or abused, and who then must face their attacker again, months or years down the road. Even though the original attack is long in the past, the victim will still feel the pain and be afraid of the attacker. The human mind can play some nasty tricks on its owner when it comes to trauma, and horses' minds are not all that different from ours. About the only thing I can suggest to you, without further information on your horse's history, is that you keep your male relatives and friends away from the animal so that no one gets hurt and your horse doesn't become so traumatized that he's impossible for you to work with or around. Good luck, and I hope this helps.
