Is it safe to IM from a hotspot?

my question is is it safe to IM from a hotspot, on top of that, when I sign on into the software on my computer, are my passwords safe?

Well mostly yes. but it is possible for someone to "steal" your password over a Wifi Hotspot connection.

If using public hotspots the best method to use is use IM from a secure website https:// connection. Those are encrypted and not very easy to read.

There are a lot of articles about using public hotspots and sending a clear password (which IM uses) is one of the risks.
