i am in love with a boy who lives in california and i live in new york. we chat and email and hes the sweetest guy everrr. he tells me he loves me, that im beautiful and smart and that he wants me. i doubt we'll ever see each other so i dont know if i should have hope or tell him its over.

Take it from me, long distance relationships are way more complicated that regular ones. My boyfriend and I don't even live in the same country however, we see each other at least every month (yea expensive). Yet it's still really stressful.
You say you guys hardly ever get to see each other, I say its only gonna get worst emotionally for you two, if you keep this up seriously.
Keep the relationship going, but it should be a casual one, and not a heavily committedd one... that is unless one of you plan to move to be with the other some time in the near future.
Otherwise, you guys should just be "friends" or something....

That would be rough, don't say it's over. Tell him may be you both should keep your options open and date other people until you are able to meet each in person some day. That way you won't crush the guys heart so badly.
