I really meant 'many/most' not every culture.

Clowns are the basis for rearranging culture. They gave rise to theatre. Clowns are the most human characters you can invent. They always search for meaning in a world that seemingly has none. I guess that is the power of clowns they are like us, they feed our innate need to have someone understand our curiosity.

Every culture? Well, thats alot of cultures. I know that in ancient Chinese they used jesters (clowns). The Pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Germany, Greece, Rome. Many many different cultures used clowns/jesters as a form of entertainment.
Clowns used to cheer people up. Clowns were used as a form of entertainment. I know that clowns started "comedy" by accident when goof-ups were a success. Clowns were and are still used for distraction from danger.
These days, clowns are used from children's birthday parties to circus & fairs as well as horror films.

It depends on your definition of clowns. Sure the traditional jester (clown) has been around in many cultures for thousands of years, but the erogant jokester has been around since the beginning of time.

part of human nature is to poke fun at others or laugh when somebody gets hurt (just watch america's funniest videos) same theme even after 15 years. Another reason is that at times you just want to throw something at a person that is not there with you so a jester made the perfect target.

Well they have not been in every culture until more resents times.. But they have been around ever since man-kind has left the caves to live in dwelling.. so yes they have been around for thousands of years....................................
