Why are manholes round?

So when they lift it, there's no way the cover can fall in accidentally. Square, rectangle and triangle can tip in one corner and gravity will take over and pull it down. Round won't, and sometimes it's easier for more than two people to lift it, too.

Because if they were any other shape they could fall in the hole.
Also because they can be rolled when doing repairs or whatnot.

Ooops I misread. I thought you meant manhole covers.

Nevermind....
