after midnight, past morning(slang)

and yes there are periods I took college comp and that was an exam question I remember I got correct, but most people don't use them and it is still understood

am and pm stand for ante-meridian and post-meridian. They mean before and after the sun is at the meridian. The meridian is noon. Thus, ante-meridian is before noon (the morning) and post-meridian is after noon (the afternoon).

There are no periods - it's am and pm - and the words stand for ante meridian (before noon) and post meridian (after noon)
They come from Latin roots.

Nope. Ante meridiem and post meridiem. diem=day, I think the first answer was close, before and after noon/half day?

the prime meridian in Greenwich,England is where time begins. a.m. means ante meridian, and p.m. means post meridian.
