am and pm stand for ante-meridian and post-meridian. They mean before and after the sun is at the meridian. The meridian is noon. Thus, ante-meridian is before noon (the morning) and post-meridian is after noon (the afternoon).

There are no periods - it's am and pm - and the words stand for ante meridian (before noon) and post meridian (after noon)
They come from Latin roots.
