I have worked in the electronics industry for over 20 yr. Many companies look to hire new graduates as technicians. This gives the newbies a chance to learn the practical aspects of their business as opposed to just theory. This is in my opinion a very good idea. Having worked with many fresh engineers, those who see the way things are actually made do a much better job of design.

Here's an idea, you might want to ask your son to ask a few Businesses if they will allow for him to do an internship for free. He may not be making any money, but that experience will sure come in handy for a good job.

Here's another idea, tell your son that he going to find a way to get inside of a company even if it's not an engineering job. He can work at some non-engineering job and when an engineering job comes up, he can apply for that job. Many companies like to promote from within, and since your job as his foot in the door and he has an Engineering Degree, there's a good chance that might get the job.

Not trying to be rude to you, but why isn't your 23 year old son asking this question?
