new alternator. although it would not hurt to do both. a bad battery and cause premature failure to the alternator

You probably need an alternator. If it were good it would run the car even without a a battery, and no battery light.

could be a bad alternator, a bad or dirty battery cable or a bad battery. The best way to find out is to have it tested.

There are other possibilities. You might have a bad voltage regulator, bad cables, or poor connections. Any fully equiped shop has diagnostic instruments and can diagnose the problem so that you don't waste time and money replacing things at random, and you should take your car to one.

bring your car to a parts dealer like Napa.they will test both your battery and your alternator for free.
