I'm thinking of neighborhoods like Florida City. Any suggestions?

Florida City, Homestead, and Cutler Ridge are the best places to stay to save you lots of money, and located fairly close to the Keys.
There's a Best Western Floridian located in Cutler Ridge that is a very small, but pleasant place to stay. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Since you're gonna spend most of your time in Key Largo i would suggest the Sheridan...I'm pretty sure they changed the name of the hotel but its still awesome as when it was called the "Sheriton"
Do NOT under any circumstance stay at the Marriott at the keys...IT IS BORING AND UGLY!!!AND THE SERVICE SUCKS!.. i practically live at the keys ,do not stay there.
Do yourself a favor!

hope you enjoy the keys!its a great place!

If you want to stay in Key largo check out these suites
http://www.opsuites.com/default.asp
I have stayed there and sometimes they offer specials such as rent one night get one free. (depedends on the time of the year)
If you are wanting cheaper check out one of the smaller islands near by. Just keep in mind that the closer you are to Key West the more you are likely to spend. So Key Largo is your best bet.
