I was told years ago not to mess with the ceiling vents. But one bathroom is much colder than the rest of our two story house.
It has two outside ac units and is a 4500 square foot home.

No problem to adjusting the vent and if its the air starts to whistle and make noise there should be a damper in the supply to each vent which is located at each fitting on the main duct and that can be adjusted and will eliminate the noise. Hope this helps

Closing off the vent will not harm the unit. You may notice noise in that area from vibration. Closing the vent has the same effect as closing the door all the time; the air won't have any place to go. The best method would be to put a damper in the duct where the bathroom branch comes off, but that may be more than you want to invest.

Nope, if a room is not used hardly at all it is ok to close off that vent. If a room is too cold, I would reduce the amount of air coming out of the vent. Sometimes you have a smaller room and do not want that much air coming throught. You can also buy those air defectors that are plastic and have magnets on them and attach to the vent to direct the air where you want it to blow.
