i am trying to use it to find errors in a javascript program

Firebug, once installed, will appear in the lower right-hand corner of your window.

If you see a green checkmark, all JavaScript on the page is fine. If there are errors, you will see a red X and the number of errors. Simply click on that and you will see the errors found; click on the errors and it will show you the code that is bad.

What do you want to use it for?

Once you've downloaded it and restarted Firefox, click on the tick at the bottom right to enable it for the website you're on. You can then inspect the various elements of the page.
