It really depends on the child. I saw it for the first time when I was 7, but seeing Obi-Wan getting killed by Vader disturbed me. Of course, it did pass after four or five months and then I immediately watched The Empire Strikes Back...

I would agree with the person before me: it depends a great deal on the maturity level of the child. If she's seen other PG films before and had no problems, I'd say she's probably okay for the original Star Wars (also called A New Hope). There's violence, yes, but the worst of it is off-camera or muted (save for that brief moment in the cantina: Obi-Wan's death is pretty non-scary). If she's okay with that movie, she'll probably be fine with the rest of the Original Trilogy. Just take the time to explain that it's not real, that the Force doesn't exist, etc. like one would for any movie.
The prequels are another matter. The digital technology makes those look extremely realistic and more frightening for it. There is more violence, especially in Episodes 2&3. Two might be too intense, with the arena scenes and the duel between Anakin, Obi-Wan and Count Dooku.
Revenge of the Sith is the only movie I would absolutely not show a child. There is a lot of violence, some of which is on the graphic side of things. The fiery end result of Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader's duel is not something a younger child should see.
Bottom line? It depends on the child, but I would strongly advise you to avoid Episode III and to 'ease into' the saga with the original films.

How old is your sister?
I would say it depends on your sister's perceived maturity level (some kids "mature" quicker than others - see Dakota Fanning as an example).
I remember watching Star Wars when I was really young also (about 6 or 7), and I remain a huge Star Wars fan to this day, but I'm not sure I could recommend it to someone really young. When you think about it, the movies are actually pretty violent (lots of laser-fire shoot outs, storm troopers and bad guys exploding or falling to their death off-camera (I'm reminded of the dialog between Dante and Randall in Clerks talking about the poor, innocent contract workers that were needlessly killed in the destruction of the 2nd Death Star... but I digress...), and of course the thrilling light-saber battles with limbs getting chopped off (while there wasn't much blood shown, it's still pretty gruesome when you think about it)...
True, a lot of popular kids shows these days have some level of violence (even the old Looney Toons were pretty violent - take just about any Bugs Bunny, Coyote & Road Runner, or Tom & Jerry episodes for examples. Even the Three Stooges "comic" violence could be pretty extreme at times), so your sister is bound to be exposed to this sort of thing in some shape or form at some point during her formative years, so the important thing is that if she does see it, and doesn't understand something or has questions, that a parent (or responsible older sibling, etc. :) is there to discuss it with her and make her understand why some of what she is seeing is "right or wrong" or to answer any other questions she may have.
Communication is key!
If you need a specific age (I'm sure some may disagree with me) but I would say 8-11 years old should be appropriate. They're not quite tame enough to be considered G or PG, but they are milder than most modern-day PG-13 films, so I think that age group would be pretty good (and if you can, let her see the original theatrical releases, not the "special editions"... just my personal opinion :)
I hope this helps! ^_^

I first saw the original trilogy when I was about 6 years old - I did like the movies, but I remember Palpatine really scared me and at one point, my mom was wondering if she should stop letting me watch them because I had her up at night telling her I was scared that "the emperor" was going to come electrocute me in my sleep...haha. I wasn't totally traumatized but I guess it wouldn't have hurt for me to have waited a couple of years to see them. So I would say depending on what your kid can handle and how scared they get, around 6-8 years old is the right time. That's for the original trilogy and the PG-rated prequels. Episode III (Revenge of the Sith) is the only one that got a PG-13 rating and that one is much darker and more violent so I would definitely advise against letting a young child watch that. I was 13 when that movie came out in theaters and even at that age, I remember being pretty shocked at how graphic that scene at the end (Anakin getting burned) was and I wasn't able to get that image out of my head for awhile! It definitely would have traumatized me if I had been the age I was when I watched the original trilogy!

I was 7 when I saw the original 3 and loved every second of it. Almost all of them are rated PG anyways (except the 3rd), so there's nothing wrong.
