i agree with you (cause i personally, get really pissed off seeing hilary duff and company polluting the commercial CD rack environment) but thats just how things are.
i guess it could be because of those damn politicians. the all men are created equal crap. and i guess they're still obsessed with "separate is not equal". even though we ALL know that pop will never be the equal of rock because that's just... uhch. no. never. so yeah. possibility one is that they're integrating music genres (the idiots).
another would be definition dispute. some people just can't get through to their heads that dear avril lavinge is not, in fact, rock. there are things that come in the middle, like i was always under the impression that the all american rejects were rock but Wikipedia claims them to be "power pop" or
"punk pop".
in the mean time, i say... LET'S ALL RALLY FOR ROCK INDEPENDENCE!!

In times gone past it was common for silly music and serious music to be enjoyed by all. Now days music is more polarised. Pop/Rock bands(mostly) Played their instruments. Now days the look and age of the person performing is paramount. Pop music is now a dirty word, full of Girls Aloud and Westlife, Timberlake etc. There was a time when the charts had Hendrix and cilla black in the same top 10. Let's face it Crud is Crud, no matter what the genre!

Because pop stands for popular. So it's actually kind of saying popular rock. And also, excluding the rap and hip hop (junk), pop/rock is dominating the charts. Most people who ask and answer questions in this section aren't talking about Justin Timberlake and Fergie anyway, so that's the lucky thing.

I totally agree with you. Rock and pop have nothing in common. Except the fact that some artists sing "pop rock"... like avril lavigne and kelly clarkson... and mcfly is also known for their pop rock. But really, rock has so many categories that distinguishes it from pop. Alternative, indie, punk, hard metal.. etc, etc, but pop doesn't.

It is possible for rock and metal to cross over and become a pop song. Pop stands for popular.

Pop is just what is says: Popular. Rock has always been the most popular music in America, it has defined our culture. It makes sense why they are in the same category.

One reason is that in like the 60s good rock music was consisdered "pop" or popular. Also, one of rock's subgenres is pop-rock so that would be another reason to pair them together.
