I have over 35 years experience in advertising.
Free advertising?
This is the most commonly asked question on Yahoo Answers in the Internet Marketing area.
Everyone that has a website seems to think that there must be great ways to advertising it for FREE and get zillions of people to go there.
THINK ABOUT THIS; If it were that easy, why would anyone pay for a Google Adword program or any other type of paid promotion?
With millions of website all hoping to get visitors, does it make more sense to attract them with marketing? If you opened a restaurant, would everyone just come by because it was open?
Of course not. You have to advertise and that takes money. So stop whining and waste time. If you have a good site and it's a true business, invest back into it with a proper planned marketing strategy including SEO, PPC, and other online approaches.
There is no free lunch. Nuff said.

With no funds to work with, you'll need all of the free resources you can get, and you'll also need and approach to developing your website that virtually guarantees that Google, Yahoo, Msn and the others will beat a path to your door.

This cannot begin until you take the CTPM or Content-Traffic-Pre-sell-Monetize aprroach developed by Dr Ken Evoy from Canada.

In a nutshell, great content drives great pre-sold traffic, which in turn needs only to be quietly monetized. I'll give you some links that you can use to get the free resources as well as get a hold of the whole ideology and stratgey that is this approach.

On the very last link click, then scroll to Recent Posts. Next go to "I hate to say I told you so". Click there then go to The Tao Of CTPM. You get almost everything you need to know about promoting your site at no cost to you except a little work.

I could say more, but I think the links would really do it better.

Define the scope of the site. Do you want everyone to see it in your city? State? Country? Planet?

Nobody has a magic wand to get you message out to everyone without any time or cost.

That's what you've got- your time and your money. You can call through the phone book for that matter, or you can buy a ton of advertising. Anywhere between these two extremes is a publicity/marketing solution, and the effectiveness of these depends on the brainpower you put into it.

If you really are serious, and really have a nonexistent or tiny budget, I'd suggest you read Guerilla Marketing (Levinson) or the spinoff, Guerilla Marketing for Free (also by Jay Conrad Levinson.) Don't buy it at the bookstore; I'd advise buying it used on Amazon.com or Half.com. Read it at the library if you want, but you're better off owning it.

Good luck with your miracle. Hey, tell you what- email me with what it's about that you're doing. Maybe I'll like it and help you build a surprising step into the scene.

There are several things you could do - they all take time.

1) Search and search and search through the internet for free directories that are relevant to your website.
2) Email loads and loads of websites that are relevant to your and request a link on their website - they can only say no!
3) Word of mouth - Get the word out there! Join up to sites like myspace with a company page and then look through as many different profiles as possible and asking them to come and look at your page.
4) Write a press release, not just selling your website but an informative well researched article including your web address at some point. Then send it to all newspapers, radio and magazines that are relevant.
5) Post this article on the internet - there are many free sites.

Fully optimise your site while it is being written!
Investigate SEO methods, a good website coder will know all the best SEO ways to get the site high in the search results. The biggest at the mo is writing the site in XHTML 1.0, very search engine friendly but take a little skill to write the code, and there are more than an extra 100 ways so people write books on it. Anyway, number 1 of 100 is Meta KeyWords....
Good luck!

This question gets asked at least daily so if I sound jaded I'll apologise.

Register your site with as many search engines as possible and especially with http://www.dmoz.org This site supplies the stats for so many other it's not true. Especially Alexa.com which itself supplies data to Google.

Find forums related to the topic of your site and make sure your sites name is in your forum signature. Make sure you post good answers to peoples questions to build you trustworthiness and you'll get visitors to your site.

Banner exchanges: Join a few and make sure they do 'circular' exchanges where A shows B's banner, B show's C and C shows A. This gives you one way links to your site.

Surf exchanges where you can build up credit for looking at other peoples sites and you use that credit to display your own.

FFA or Free For ALL sites push your name out there and may pull in a small amount of traffic IF you are not promoting money making schemes, drugs or software. Start at http://steven938.freffas.com

Social networking sites: Myspace, bebo, and the rest. Blogging sites. Create your own pages on these, make them relavent to your sites topic and link to it using keywords rather than the site name.

Enough ideas to get you started. As they're free you'll have to stuff in return and they will take time. There's no free short cuts... although I can sell you some, of course.

Good luck

What if I told you that you could produce 15 thousand unique visitors a month, That the visitors would be highly targeted which means that they have a current interest in your products or services, and that it would be 100% free. Would you take the time to at least read to find out?

Now, Would you believe you can get to this level in about 3 months with less than 30 hours a month in labor.

Article marketing is your huckleberry if you want this mush targeted traffic for free. Article marketing has the ability to make your site highly popular not only in the general publics eyes, but also the major search engines. Lets cover some search engine information first.

The first thing we need to do is dispel a few myths. The first myth is that links from related sites are better than non related sites. This is part true , Each page within a site is its own entity. PR is a way to prove it as a rank is assigned to each page, not one rank for the entire site, so a link on a related page is effective. Like an article directory.

The reason I say this is because the value of a link is rated by PR of the page the link is on, notice I did not say site? Having your keyword or some of your keywords in the title and content of the page. Number of outbound links from the page and the text or keywords close to your link. This is just a few of the factors. There are many other factors like position of the link on the page.

The beauty of articles is that you control the content and the title of the page it is published on. If you go to any article directory and click on an article you will notice that the title of the page is the title of the article. Most bloggers and web-site publishers also use the same practice. So, if you write your title right you just acquired links with your keywords in the title of the page. That just helped the power of the link. Now, if you manage to get your keywords of phrases in the content you just made it more powerful.

This is starting to look pretty good now, Lets keep going and see if we can find some more places to find advantages of articles.

The whole reason of articles is to gain targeted traffic, Right? Well, I am going to blow your mind here, Let me show you some stats from just one article.

Article id 328196 on ezinearticles.com has had 241 views, 16 publishes and emailed 1 time. And this is just 1 article in one directory. With a 1% click through ratio that is 2 clicks to the site. Not very impressive. Lets investigate a little deeper.

This article was submitted to about 100 directories and is showing about 150 times in Google. To see this get an article title and past it in a search engine and you can see how may times it is indexed by that search engine. Now with an average of 2 clicks per publish, that just brought the traffic to 300 clicks from one article.

I can write an article in about an hour, What would 300 clicks cost on adwords? Are you starting to get the picture?

Now lets start writing just 1 article a day and now we do 300 times 30. That is for 30 days in a month. Now what does your traffic look like? It still gets better. What does month 2 do, what about month 3 and so on.

These figures are not counting what you get from Google, Yahoo and MSN from the higher rankings in the search engines. The natural search traffic varies depending on your keywords.

Now, the page you get your article on starts as a pr0 page, what will it be in a few months, you just increased the value of the links again, plus the traffic. Then you might have some bloggers or website owners that put your article on a pr 5 page.

The entire internet marketing game is nothing but math. Keep playing the numbers and you will soon win your game.

Articles are the most effective and cost effective way to get traffic and high search engine rankings. You have to stay consistent to make it happen.

Where else can you generate that kind of traffic and links in only 30 hours a month?.

If you want to succeed in the online marketing game, you had better make articles just as regular as your fluid intake. You are doomed to have a weak business without articles.

You say you are doing well now? How would another 15 to 20 k uniques a month help your bottom line?

It does not happen over night, but by month 2 you will start seeing a good increase in traffic and links and you know the traffic is targeted and the links are quality and are only going to get stronger.

do a search for article marketer and sign up. they will put your articles out for free! and they have tutorials to teach you how to write articles.

Google Adsense I believe comes with a little advertising. Send out an email advertising the launch of your site and ask some people to help you forward the email. If you have a business card put it on their and pass them around. You could try promoting it through myspace too. Find affiliates and trade banner links.
