My friend has been having a reoccuring UTI for over 6 months now. She went to the doctor a couple of months ago, and was prescribed antibotics. Then it came back. Here is the problem, she doesnt have any medical insurance, and no money. I am trying to find some medication she can take (besides AZO) or possibly some type of vitamin or herb, that could clear this up. Any women who have been in this situation, please help me out. She is in pain, and its been getting worse each time it comes back. She is drinking PLENTY of water and cranberry. Also taking cranberry pills, and the AZO. (Just wanted to note that in)

Your friend is going to have to see a doctor. There is no way to treat a UTI other than antibiotics. If she doesn't treat it, it will turn into a much more painful and dangerous kidney infection. The kidney infection if left untreated for too long can damage the kidney's, it could even cause death.

Please ask her to see a doctor immediately. I'm in Canada so I'm not sure how things work where you are. Is there a free clinic she can go to? She could also ask for a generic sulfa drug to treat it. It is very cheap (costs less than $10 here and most of that is the pharmacy fee).

If your friend is having a re-occurring UTI she may be getting it from having sex with someone or it may be from the way she wipes after using the bathroom. Always urinate after sex to "clean" out bacteria from the urethra, and also wiping from front to back will wipe all the bad bacteria away from the urethra so it does not enter the urinary tract. Also wearing tight clothing may worsen the problem. As for over the counter medications, there are really none. However there are cranberry pills on the market which could help. Cranberries are acidic, and change the pH of your urine so that it makes it harder for any bacteria in your urinary tract to survive. Cranberry juice also works. In addition to cranberries your friend might should try an Acid-Ash diet. This diet consists largely of meat or fish, eggs, and cereals with a minimal quantity of milk, fruit, and vegetables. When the body processes these foods it leaves an acid residue to be excreted in the urine. Good luck, let me know if you need any more help.

I agree with the other answers. Cranberry juice can help a lot. But you must see the doctor! A bladder infection that isn't treated properly can get into your kidneys and then you're really in trouble. This happened to me and I had to go to the emergency room.

Many women who get recurrent infections get them after intercourse. It is important not to have too much pressure right on the urethra during sex. She should also empty her bladder before sex and right afterwards as there is bacteria pushed up the urethra during sex and she wants to wash it back out. If she had insurance I would suggest she take macrodantin 50 mg after each act of intercourse but I guess that is not possible for her.

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from aminopenicillin group. Its mechanism of action is anti-bacterial and consists in inhibition of construction of bacteria cell walls sensitive to Ampicillin. It is not destroyed in acidic content of stomach, is easily absorbed. Ampicillin is active toward gram positive microorganisms and also some gram negative ones (salmonella, schigella, proteus, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, formerly called Pfeiffer's bacillus) and is used for treatment of the diseased provoked by mixed bacteria. Microorganisms producing penicillase are resistible to Ampicillin. This medication is used to treat pneumonia and other infectious diseases of respiratory, urogenital, gastrointestinal systems.
