They say oh its not that dirty you can use it agian. Well i don't want to. I don't have a dishwasher and i hate doing dishes. So why do people by disposable stuff only to reuse it. Its probably because he lived through the depression. I'm with you, toss em.
Otherwise it defeats the purpose.

My mom does this, too. She grew up in depression era Texas where EVERYTHING was rare. If your father grew up pre-WW2, then this is why. You didn't throw away anything, you found use for everything. Also, during the war, people learned to recycle for the first time....for the war effort. This generation doesnt understand because we live with an abundance of anything and everything we need. They didn't have this. Its a very tough habit to break, but you love your parents so you deal with it. I do the dishes (no dishwasher either) and I end up tossing out alot of the stuff behind her back. As long as she see's some of it there, I hear no complaints. It could also be a little bit o OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) too. Its an emotionally complicated situation so you learn to live with it the best way you can because you love them. Just toss a few here and there when they arent looking so you dont get backed up and they have a few pieces "incase they need them". Its also economical...say you have a friend who has kids who comes to visit and the kid wants water - wouldnt you rather that kid have an old plastic cup instead of one of your good glasses to drink from? Say you find a stray animal and you want to give them something to eat outside...you have an old used paper plate to put something on. I've taken food to neighbors who were ill and I have to admit, they've come in handy. I dont have to worry about expecting my dishes back. If you have the funds to spend on disposables often, thats ok...but this stuff does come in handy sometimes, albiet not that often. Just have some patience...I mean, my moms old. Someday I'm going to miss her mess ;) So I put up with it now with a tired smile.

Only the plastics. Not paper plates. You can just rinse off good. Things cost money. Reusing and rinsing off plastic is easier than the energy used running a dish washer. It's just more convenient and why waste money buying more when there still usable?
