I think it lost favour in North America because of the cold war. The communists REALLY embraced May Day as THEIR national holiday, and would have huge parades showing off their country's latest armament. Being as we were so rabidly anti-communist May Day was dropped as a holiday here.
I got this quote...
In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1st both as Loyalty Day and as Law Day. Each year, the sitting president proclaims these observances on May 1.

I remember May Day and the Maypole; this was decorated with flowers and streamers, the loose ends of which were held by dancers, who encircled the pole, weaving intricate patterns as they passed each other in the dance. It goes back to Ancient Rome (believe it or not) and represents the first day of Spring. It's not celebrated in schools at all anymore.

May Day is the 24th of May, it it celebrated the Queen's birthday. Traditional events included dancing around the May pole. It's a British tradition and it is still carried on in many parts of the world.
It was always a school holiday, and kids used to chant 'The 24th of May is the Queen's Birthday. if you don't give us a holiday, we'll all run away."

We had a May celebration when I was in the infants school - we came to school in Browmie or Guide uniform (if we were members). The other girls wore particularly pretty clothes that day. Do you remember if it was called Empire Day? Nobody has empires nowadays - (doesn't stop them wanting them though)
