the key is in the "on" position, but you do not start the engine; the battery sign is lit on the instrument panel...
in this case, how long will it take for the battery to drain if
1. the A/C is on
2. just the fan is on ?

The compressor won't operate unless the engine is running and won't use more or less stored electricity. There are too many variables to say definitively how long without knowing more about your car and the battery.
The fan, on high with a battery holding a good charge will last from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the quality of the battery (the cranking amps need to be rated at the minimum for the car at least). An average battery in the middle of it's life expectancy (3 years of a 6 yr. batt.) would probably still turn the engine over during the summer after half an hour of high fan. You might not do it in the dead of winter.
If you have a battery which far exceeds the cranking amps for your car and it's new, you could run the fan for a couple hours and still crank the engine over. An older battery might not last 15-20 minutes before not being able to start a rough starting vehicle.
To answer your actual question, "How long will a car battery last with the A/C on and engine not running? The same amount of time as if it were just the fan.
Happy motoring,
wayne

Without the engine running, the A/C isn't running. The clutch, which is electric, *might* be telling it to run, and even if it isn't if you leave the key on eventually the battery will go dead. So turn off the key.

a long time. the battery will last thru the night un less you have an older one 3+ years then its a shooting gallery. by the way if you did I would suggest recharging the battery now before work week.

In my car, the A/C can't run unless the engine is on. The fan can run, but not the A/C.

It won't last too long before you will have to jump start the car. Maybe a half hour

it would really depend on the size of the battery and how strong it is, but the AC would not operate without the engine on, the compressor is belt driven...

That's one of the most pointless questions I've ever read.

Why would you do that?
