think it is fantastic when those who are MR/DD are taken out in public by friends and family members. they are able to know they are important and are part of our culture and society.

wow, this is touchy and I don't want to offend.
but some people can make me uncomfortable, just because I'm not used to their specific behaviors, or sometimes the way they look.
but I just play it by ear, as far as being really nice or whatever. some with MR have the mind of a child, some are more adultlike.

in the beginning you cant help it, if youve never been around people like that, you dont know what to do. ive known a few, and have talked with them for quite a while. they are slow, but they have the same emotions as everyone else, and in some ways, can get deeper than the norm. yeah, i go out of my way to be nice and say hi, but for different reasons. i find them refreshing. they dont know how to be shallow.

I think honestly that most people would be a little bit curious and probably stare at the individual, especially if they were say autistic and made loud noises... but all in all, I think after an initial stare, most would mind their own business and not make a deal over it !!!

I treat them like everyone else. I would rather spend time with someone mentally retarded because I feel like they deserve and need someone to be their for them.

Its not easy as no one wants to be ignored. But when people look, they are afraid that they might appear to be "staring" which no one wants either.
