99.9 % of the time you will not have a problem. The .01% you have to worry about. A spark during ignition could cause the fumes from fueling to ignite. to say the least this would be very bad and not worth the risk. This is why all gas stations have warnings to shut off engine.

Although it is unlikely that anything would happen, with the car running there is a possibility of igniting gasoline vapors which could travel into your tank causing a big boom. Not a smart idea.
