That's the way our minds work, we are always trying to make things easier and better than before, and the fact than one can make a tremendous amount of money in doing so is a very good motivator.

Incorrect perspective. If we see the world as material or spiritual we encounter greed and fear. Both have very negative consequences and offer no gratifying sense of meaning.
The spiritual world has been used particularly by modern religions to ameliorate fear through safety in numbers, i.e., consensus. This requires the kind of progress we are experiencing as it assume from the material perspective that "knowledge is power" to make consensus with.
Materially, greed is initially good, expressed by all infants... and ultimately self-destructive without personal intellectual control. It results in the same kind of power acquisition for self-gratification but the guides of principles are absent.
Considering the self (and everything) as made of value is the correct perspective. It answers without contradiction all meaningful questions and supplies a lifelong sense of meaning through the justification of ones existence as being a dynamic, integral and creative part of existence itself.
The effect of recognized meaning is the elimination of fear and greed in the uncivil sense. A single focus upon value makes it possible for our intellect to identify the principles of a civil existence. This evolution does not deny technology but it makes it evolve much slower because we sense proper meaning and can figure out what is genuinely important. It tell us gratification is not tied to technology. It creates a culture far different than we are currently experiencing.

We advance technologically because we fear what will happen if we do not. We are creatures of fear for the most part. Until we can control the fear in us we will never know what peace and tranquility really are.
I bet someone in the 1600s imagined a world like today they were just called crazy and nobody listend to the warnings they gave... Just as we call people today crazy and dont listen to them. I could tell you what the world imo will look like 20 years from now but I dont want to put you into a depression so I wont :)

Because many of us don't wish to remain stagnant or to revert back to the "dark ages". Technological advancement means human progress. Now all we have to learn is to get along with one another and not use our technologies to destroy ourselves; the path we walk right now.

because we are programmed from before birth to "want to learn" - it is instinctual to thirst for knowledge about the world, ourselves, others.... we advanced technology only when we had a grasp of the natural world & our basic safety & physical needs were met (we moved out of caves & into homes)... we are always searching for things to learn, technology is only one area in which we do this.
