I wouldn't do it.
I hauled gasoline with my semi truck before and have seen how much damage vapor from gasoline can happen. Since you drive a gas engine, you have spark plugs to run it. Any spark even the spark plugs can ignite the vapors and you have an explosion on your hand.

If your engine is running while your putting gas in and it has a spark for some reason it will cause an explosion.
How the running car would have a spark I have no idea, they say the same thing about cell phones when your pumping gas.
Both are not allowed, there have been a few gas stations explode from situations like that so now it's not allowed.

No it is not ok. The vapor is what burns, not the liquid. A spark from any source can ignite the vapor, since that is the only element missing from the fire triangle at the gas pumps. The spark can come from faulty spark plug wires or a short in the wiring system on the car. It could come from other cars close to you as well. If ignited at a source away from you, the flames backtrack to the source, which would be you and everyone else that is filling their tank.

If you touch a metal surface of car then get put static will be discharged. They have proven that its when someone try to get something out of car while pumping that the problems occur.
But just don't do it. I have done it for 40 years and see it done all time . But it is a law not to in most states.
Oh and the cell phone thing is a farce to.

No doesn't your mother yell at you? Mine would. Same goes for talking on your cell phone. Thats a no no. It can somehow cause a spark or start a fire. Read the warning signs at the gas station the next time you a filling up.

No. Do not put gas in the car while it is running, if there is a bad spark plug wire, short in your wiring, etc. it could ignite the gas vapor and you will be burned alive with your poor car.

Most places these days will ask you to turn off your engine as a precaution but it is ok either way. I used to do this all the time when i was living in the philippines and never had an accident.

None of the gas stations where I live would even let me try it.
For your safety and the safety of everyone around you, I'd have to suggest that you turn the car off.

I'ts not recommendable to fill your tank while the engine is running because it confuses the computer and the readings of fuel levels.

Gasoline vapor coming from the filler neck is highly explosive.Any ignition source has the potential to cause an explosion. It has happened and that's why it is not recommended.
