Big band jazz is great. There was Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, the Dorsey Brothers, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman and in the 1960s, Gerry Mulligan had a big band. They rock.
One wonderful CD is called First Time. It is the full Count Basie band AND the full Duke Ellington band in the studio at the same time. 2 drummers, 2 bass players and both the Duke and the Count on piano. This CD swings very hard. I will be willing to bet that if you like what you've heard you will love this CD

Hi, I've been listening to jazz all my life . And , yes their is such a thing as Big Band Jazz . The Count Basie Orchestra would be a good place to start for that sound . I agree with you on the sounds of smooth jazz, a little to watered down for my taste . I like my jazz rolling and thumping , hot and with a touch of that Latin beat if you please

Big Band was also called swing in the 30s. You can find it on some cable and satellite packages in addition to online such as on Yahoo Radio.

Try to get some Count Basie or maybe Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, or Benny Goodman. Their big bands are full of swing. Duke Ellingtons band had swing but probably had more emphasis on melody.
