Three winters ago, i went snowboarding for the first time and fell in love with the sport. Recently i heard that snowboarding is bad for the environment. Is this true? If so, how exactly is it bad?

People probably think that snowboarding is bad for the environment because the lifts require energy and therefore the burning of fossil fuels to operate. Also the making of some (not all) runs requires the clearing of trees.

I guess some folks think that this is "bad" becuase all of it is simply done for fun or amusement.

All I can say is that relative to a lot of other sports and activities snowboarding and skiing is relatively eco friendly. The area of forests cleared to make way for new runs is absoutely miniscule compared to the land cleared everyday for agriculture and construction. Plus energy usage is relatively low since in any given day several thousand people are carried up the mountain. Snowmaking is ussually done with melt and rainwater stored in reservoirs for the summer to it is not wasted.

Also, the owners of resorts are some of the most ecofriendly entrepreneurs I know of since they're business is the most directly affected by global warming. In face many owners promote taking care of the environment and take extra measures to do so, like buying green energy credits.

Finally as someone said, going snowboarding puts me in touch with the outdoors and protecting the sport I love the most has really forced me to find ways to be more environmentally focused.

So in the end I think that snowboarding has probably done a lot more for the environment than most people think.

Snowboards are made from metal, wood and petrochemicals.

Snowboarders mostly (like skiers) rely on lifts to drag them up the mountain. This requires the burning of some fossil fuel either directly in diesel motors or for the production of electricity.

Snow resorts concentrate people in small areas. This concentrates effluent, trash and all the other consequences of modern life in one spot. Roads are built to secure access.

A few trees are cut down.

These things are all potentially bad for the environment, but they can be managed to minimise the impact.

No snowboarding is not bad for the environment. I think you are confused with Snowmobiling. That takes gas & older ones are 2 stroke, which let's more hydrocarbons into the enviroment that the new 4 stroke version coming out now.

Not, really, I mean there are effects, but there are downsides to everything in this world. In fact, if you're worried about the environment, get active, and slow down global warming from destroying snowboarding and the world.

There is only one reason I can think of-that is that driving to and from a mountian resort releases gases from the car. All in all, it is a lot less polluting than other sports like golf (uses a TON of water to keep the many acres of grass looking green)

they're no worse then public park, sure theres lots of trash that doesn't get recycled, people rent cars when they don't need to
and i think they have stopped putting chemicals in the snowmaking equipment. but there are several resorts going green using bio disel snowcats, and solar power. so to answer the question physically doing the sport is not the resorts however are bad.

Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard. The only bad thing is that SOME trees are destroyed, to make way for runs, but they still leave tons of trees.

Snowboardings a great sport.

If anything i'd say its GOOD for the enviornment...

Just cause snowboarders realize that global warming is going to melt the snow, and we're gonna do stuff to make sure that doesnt happen...
