Most people went to the ocean or mountain areas during the summer months. A/C in theatres was introduced in the 1920's, which made going to the theatre a very popular activity. They'd run movies all day and most people would stay to avoid the heat. Most homes had a/c by the end of WWII. Thank god we have it everywhere now. I can't imagine living without it.

The same way we're "surviving" right now - fans, open windows, a trip to the beach. We don't have AC, and I wouldn't use it if we did. I can't stand that closed-in, stale-air feeling -- I'd rather open the windows, turn on the fan, and acclimate myself to the summer so I can actually go outside and enjoy it!
And YES it's hot here -- day #9 over 90 today!

Electric fans still in common use in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries. Every little house in Trench Town has got its pedestal fan. The more prosperous inhabitants might have two.

Don't know. But, as it is 90degrees here today, I would like to personally thank the greatest man who ever lived-Willis Carrier, whose invention of AC keeps it a chilly 68 degrees inside. :)
