The British Empire was the largest empire the world has ever known. At its peak it included Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Indian sub-continent, much of East, West and Southern Africa, many of the Caribbean Islands, Guyana, Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, New Guinea, Hong Kong and many of the Pacific Island groups.
All these nations began as colonies (as did the USA) and one by one achieved self-government and independence. Most of them now belong to the Commonwealth of Nations.
There are still a few colonies remaining, by their own choice, including Gibraltar and some of the Caribbean Islands. They plus Canada, Australia and New Zealand regard the Queen of Great Britain as their sovereign head of state.
For much of the 19th and early 20th Century Great Britain had the world's largest navy and pretty much controlled the oceans.
So although your statement is not quite accurate, England did rule much of the world for a significant period.

England had colonies all over the world. It was said that the sun never sets on England because it was so spread. And of course that was because they had the most powerful navy. Eventually most countries, like America, worked out or rebelled for their own sovereignty.... Canada did it about 20 years ago, and Australia just recently voted down a measure to separate themselves from England. Mostly today these connects are decided more on commerce and good business decisions rather than ruling over people.

The British Empire once spanned the USA (lost in 1776), Canada (gradually the early 20th century), Australia (1940s) and New Zealand (early 20th century), India (1947), half of Africa (various dates, largely after the Second World War) , the Middle East, British Guiana (in South America, 1966).....with regard to Canada/Australia they still have the Queen as head of state, but will stop even that when she dies. We also had lots of islands in the Carribean/off the coast of Africa/Australia....we still have some (Bermuda, Monserrat, Jamaica). See map for how much we gave back!

Have you been living in a cave. The British Empire (now you have to whisper that on here because it annoys some folk) was probably the Greatest Empire the world has ever known. The British Monarch (Victoria, Edward, George V etc...) was sovereign of over a fifth of the worlds population. It was described as the workhouse of the world due to the industrial revolution and the Royal Navy controlled the seas. During the 19th century 90% of all ships in the world's oceans were British, and we drank lots of tea.
