After five years of Nazi rule, 1938's Kristallnacht was just an event waiting to happen."Kristall" is just glass, and it signifies the glass from Jewish-owned shopfronts shattered by Nazi Stormtroopers. Jews had been subject to many indignities before this, but none that told them so clearly that the new world meant danger to them.

Many Jews had left Germany before this, and many more followed -- leaving their property behind. Unfortunately many of them migrated to countries that would later fall under Nazi rule, as Anne Frank's did to the Netherlands.

Kristallnacht is also known as the crystal night. This event started when a German-Polish Jew assassinated a German official. After the assassination, SA stormtrooper destroyed thousands of Jewish shops, homes, and other Jewish related symbols. The event was name crystal night due to the massive amount of broken glass left on the floor from the Jewish stores and homes.

Kristallnacht was known as the night of broken glass when the Nazis harassed the Jewish merchants and destroy their businesses and consfication of their property . It was also the beginning of a further persecution of the Jewa and eventually would lead to the final solution and the Holocaust.

It was actually orchestrated by Ernst Rohm and his Brownshirts and was the first Nationwide, obvious, horrific persecution of the Jews under Hitler.
