Woodsmoke, I myself would not ever cease being their friend! And if they demanded the truth, I would not lie! And sometimes, a judgement call has to be made on occasion, when something has to be "omitted", or whether it's even necessary for them to know at all! The important thing is to make a judgement with the compassion of a friend!

It depends on what your friend wants to know the truth about. Is it a major deal or a little white lie? I wouldn't cease being their friend, but if you did something wrong, and you're truely sorry, tell them so and if they are a friend worth having, they will forgive you.

I think that the truth hurts, but discovering you've been lied to hurts worse.
Tell them the truth. Don't candy coat it, don't try to smooth the edges. Spit it out with an apology, but let them know you love them, but cannot lie to them.
They may get their feelings hurt but in the end they will know they can trust you.
