Most people think goldfish are "dirty" because of the waste they produce. What most people do not know is goldfish like koi have no stomachs and require more feedings per day a minimum of 3. Goldfish cannot use foods they eat the same way other fish do. What goes in, comes out. Since part of quality of life for caring for goldfish means feeding 3 times or more per day this causes more waste. This is why many people feel they are "dirty" fish.

They say it because goldfish are thought of as being a child's pet and not needing to have much care but in reality they need just as much care as any other fish. They are also not slim bodied fish. They produce the same amount of waste as any fish of their body type. But people don't think of an oscar as being a child's pet. Thus, the dirty goldfish. They need twice the amount of tank as any fish it's size because they are compared to fish that are of a different body type.
And yes, as long as you take proper care of the tank, you can keep them in that 10 gallon healthy for quite some time. I don't think 4 of them will do well in there for all of their lives, but in a 20 long maybe. I wouldn't say that to anyone who wasn't doing proper maintenance, but since you are, they will eventually need more room to swim then they have in the 10 gallon. Imagine 4 6-8" fish in that 10 gallon. For now though, it sounds like you, and they, are doing great.

You took my words out of my mouth
I feel the same way.
I have also a 10 gallon tank, and it also stays clean with the proper care.
Some of the goldfish I have already since 4 years, and they are still happy and healthy, I haven't had one sick fish in all this time
I know that everybody is going to tell me that my tank is overstocked, but I have 2 big orange ones in there and about 6 small ones
If you're dedicated to your fish everything is going to be just fine and your tank stays clear and clean

I don't understand why they say that either. I feel if you do your water chances like you should there no dirtier than any other fish. People are also going to say your tank isn't big enough for gold fish. But I use to have gold fish in that size tank when I was a kid and they did fine. Of course bigger tanks are better We all like as much room as we can get. But keep up the good work and stay dedicated, All pet owners of any kind should be dedicated.

Some people just want you to think they know it all. I also have 2 goldfish, in a 10 gallon tank also, and my tank is clean. As long as I do what you have already mentioned!
It's good to be dedicated to you fish! I take mine to school, shop with them, eat with them, hug them...WHAT!?

usually because goldfish are kept by casual fish owners. So, the tanks are not cared for and the fish are overfed. If you feed them correctly and keep the water fresh and filtered, you are correct, it is not too bad.

goldfish are very messy fish. people say this because they poop and pee alot. fish waste produces ammonia. you should really research the nitrogen cycle and how to properly cycle the tank. and the size that your fish can get. goldfish can get very big, depending on the species.you should not change the filter pad everyweek. this will cause stress on the fish and lead them to an early death. again, research the nitrogen cyclye and how to cycle a tank and you will know why. the water itself styas clear, but the levels of toxic substances in the water will rise.

They are heavy bodied fish. They need to be taken care of like any other fish. They are not easy beginner fish, they require rigorous and dilligent tank maintenece. They need plenty of fresh water often, like you do on your tank. Most people want to skip out on changing water, and they complain when the fish get ill. If you keep the water good the fish will never get sick, and certainly not die on you.
