How can I find the number of.....?

Houses in a given town/city etc. I know how to find out populations but I'm looking to sepcifically find out how many houses/dwellings there are. IT's UK specific please

The US Census has a site with that information. American Fact Finder? Something like that....oh... UK

Probably the tax office, or ask over at city hall
