1 7/8. First, make it so that both fractions share a common denominator. 2 and 8 can both go into 8, so use that as your denominator. Since 2*4 = 8, make sure you multiply 1*4 as well. This results in: 3 4/8 - 1 5/8. Since 4 is less than 5, and 1 = 8/8, simply take 1 from 3 and make it 8/8. Then add that to 4/ 8, to get 12/8. (This is so you have a greater number minus a smaller number, when it comes to the fractions.) So, 2 12/8 - 1 5/8 = 1 7/8.

Hope that helps.

first thing you need to do is make you fraction part match, multiply 1/2 by 4 to make 4/8 your problem should now look like 3 4/8 - 1 5/8. like any other subtraction problem you will need to borrow from the 3 to make the first portion 2 12/8 now subtract the top fraction 12 -5 = 7/8 then the subtract your whole numbers 2-1=1 for your answer of 1 7/8

1/ make the numbers top heavy
so
3 1/2= 6+1/2= 7/2

1 5/8= 13/8

2/ find a number that both 2 and 8 go into which is 8

2 goes into 8------------- 4 times
so 7x4/8= 28/ 8

28-13/8= 15/8

3/ now 8 goes into 15 only once and then you have 7 left over

so the answer is 1 7/8
