It depends on waht it is. It could be a flat 4 which would be 4 cylinders in a row, or some people like subaru use a boxer 4 which is 4 in a 2x2 manner.

You need to count spark plugs on the intake side of the engine, Ford has some 4's with spark plugs on the exhaust side, so pay attention ... Good luck!

close the hood and go back in the house. your mechanic will tell you if you have a four cylinder. all you need to know is how to check and add gas and oil.
