He is next in succession , however , his grandmother lived to be over 100, his mother looks to be in pretty good health, so Prince Charles might not get the throne until he's in 70s or 80s.

yeah & isn't she in grand shape. now on to charles? he's a smart fellow & has been short-changed for ages. he's also quite outspoken & this hands-off/hat's off approach to his truths might & has caused controversy. he doesn't want to be 'defender of the faith' but he states that he'd rather be defender of faith. this means his failure to take that stance could & would put the prelate in westminister abbey out of business, the pope in rome in possible power- oh the possibles are almost endless. with this in mind , the queen might not want to depart the throne until her death. today, people are quite capable of living ages beyond their ancestors' ages, so queen elizabeth 2 could live well into her 90s or beyond. her mother certainly lived a long time. no, my english friend. charles will not become king in elizabeth's time. and also maybe that's good. after all, how many bad kings & queens has britain gotten because of a quick crowning with no schooling. prep is everything. grow into what's yours by birth right. if not charles, then maybe william but then maybe not. what you might be looking at is the beginning of the end of the british monarchy & the seedlings of a republic.

He may or may not be. Many Brits say the monarchy itself is obsolete. Charles doesn't have popular support, and his sons are loved mostly for superficial reasons (as Chicanita mentioned.) Charles is in line to be the next figurehead, but Britain is not "ruled" per se, by the Royal family. Talk to the PM and cabinet for "ruling" matters.

He will be when QE2 pops it, not before then. I can't see the old battleaxe abdicating can you?
And he will be King. Why should he pass it to William when he has waited his turn for so long? I never understand why people say he should just hand it over to William. He is next in line to the throne, it isn't a popularity contest, you can't vote him out.

The Queen will never step down. If Charles doesn't die before she does then I believe he will be King, I don't think he will go against tradition and pass the role on to his son.

OH my God. King Charles. what a terrible thought. Plus Queen Camilla, and has anyone else noticed how plain and ordinary William has begun to look? He looked good a few years ago but he's steadily looking worse and worse. Rotten genes, I'm afraid.

Let us hope this wasteful and thankfully powerless institution has been eliminated by then.
God scrap the Queen/King!
