Michelangelo di Buonarroti is widely considered one of the greatest artists of all time. He grew up near Florence and studied art, especially fresco painting, in a studio there. Among his works is the statue of David, commissioned by the City of Florence, considered by many to be the world's greatest sculpture. He also carved several pietas, depicting the Virgin Mary with her dead child Jesus. His sculptures displayed an unprecedented realism and technical mastery. Although he thought of himself as a sculptor, he was also commissioned as an architect to build St Peter's Cathedral at the Vatican, and as a painter to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, both considered among the great masterpieces of all time.
