Water resistant and water proof are two different things. Water resistant means that the watch will probably be ok to 30 feet but the manufacturer isn't going to guarantee that it will be. You are at your own risk there. If it's water proof then the manufacturer is saying that they guarantee the watch to be fine at 30 feet and if it fails, you have recourse if the watch is still under warranty. I've had a Timex Ironman, I used as a backup bottom timer while diving that was water resistant rated to 150 feet fail at less than 20 feet. I've also had the same model of watch be fine on a dive to 250 feet.

As a general rule, no. It isn't water proof. Just water resistant. That means it is ok to get it wet while washing the car, splashing etc. But it isn't safe for being underwater. Being underwater adds pressure to the enclosed area of the watch. This means water will be forced into the works. A true water proof watch is not only sealed better, it is pressurized to resist outside pressure from the water. Going from above water, to just below the surface doubles the pressure on the watch. Then every 33 feet adds another atmosphere of pressure.

It means that you can go swimming but if you swim deeper than 30 ft than you have a good chance of breaking the water tight seal thus destroying the watch

A water resistance rating of 100M indicates that it is suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports as specified by the ISO 2281 standard. It doesn't mention shallow diving, but brief free dives in the 10-20 foot range should be ok especially if you don't try to use any controls on the watch at depth. As long as you aren't looking to invest much in the watch it seems like a pretty safe risk.

Big difference in the two terms. Resistant and proof.
Regular swimming should be fine. If you want to go to 30 feet buy a dive watch.

It is water proof.
Water is an extremely heavy substance, and the water resistant stuff can only withhold up to 30 feet of water on top of it.
But you arent going to a 30 foot pool, are ou?

Yes you can but if you go under 30 ft or lower water eventually after some pressure will go into the watch.
