No, goldfish and tropical fish should not be put into the same tank. They have drastically different temperature requirements that need to be addressed.

The goldfish are coldwater fish that need temps in the range of 60-65 degrees.

The tropicals need to be kept in temps of 72-76 degrees and some even higher than that.

Keeping a fish in the wrong temp water stresses them a lot and eventually compromises their immune system. Then, opportunistic parasites and diseases take over and the fish's life is shortened appreciably.

Trying to find a middle ground temp for both does nothing except stress them both and shortens their lives. You should get another tank for the goldfish or decide which ones you want to keep if that is not an option.

Think of your self in a constant 50 degree temp without enough clothes to stay warm. Eventually you would get sick and not be able to fight off the illness. It is the same with high temps, it drives necessary electrolytes out of our bodies and causes loss of fluids to the point where we dehydrate. Granted, fish do not dehydrate, but they lose electrolytes and their metabolism is speeded up to the extent that their lives are shortened and their agression levels go up too.

As far as cleaning the tank, remove 25-30% of the water every week and replace it with fresh dechlorinated water. Also siphon the gravel twice a month, first the left half, then the right half the next time. This way you do not remove too many of the beneficial bacteria that help keep the tank water healthy. Change your filter cartridge once a month. You can rinse it out if it becomes clogged with fish doo and doesn't allow water to flow through it.

You can but like what most other people on here said, it isn't recommended.
Tropical and Goldfish do have temperature variences but they are hardy, and can survive just fine in warmer water.

Goldfish are very dirty though, and give off a lot of ammonia that can make your fishies sick.

Depending on what kind and size of the tropical fish you have in there, the goldfish might nip at their fins.

I used to have tropical fish and I kept one of those fancy fantail goldfish in there. Everything was fine. It is when you have several that it can cause the ammonia problem. ( I had a 55 gallon)

Oh, one more thing for the people that keep saying tropical fish are saltwater fish.......there are Freshwater and Saltwater tropical fish. I've heard saltwater fish being called "marine tropical fish also"

You can mix the two types of fish, but I wouldnt recommend it. Goldfish need a tank with cooler temperatures then tropical fish, and keeping them in a tank that is around 80 degrees like tropical fish need will reduce their life span overall. Plus, goldfish are alot messier than tropical fish.

No, you can't put tropicals together. If you have double tailed fish they do best at temperatures in the mid to high 70's. They can tolerate lower temps, but if its constantly going up and down daily, the fish will stress and eventually get ill. Most goldfish experts and breeders keep them heated, if anything to keep the temperature constant at all times. I've kept goldfish for over a decade now, the temp in my tank is a constant 78 degrees year round.

and Jo Anne Burke (former owner of Dandy Orandas) are my main sources for the temperature debate.
Tung Hoi Aquarium says goldfish grow best at temp of 81. WOW, thats the leader of the goldfish breeding world. I'd take the advice. Heat the goldfish tank.

I wouldn't advise it.

Goldfish are coldwater fish they like the water at 68 or so.. and are rather high waste producers.

Tropical fish like the water 72-77.

Plus, goldfish will eat anything they can fit in there mouth. You might find you have no more tropical fish left.

Yes, it is possible but I would not recomend you do so . Tropical fish are warm water fish and The gold fish are coldwater fish.

I would also use some caution because gold fish are Agresive.

Oh nooo! Tropical fish need to live in salt water (which im sure the store has) and goldfish live in fresh water. Its not smart to mix them together. I would ask someone at a pet store who sells tropical fish how to clean the fish tank. As for goldfish you just pour the fish into a big cup or bowl. Then rinse the tank and the stuff in it (rocks, plants ect) with hot water. Then put new water in it....filtered water is needed. If you do not have filtered then get some fish drops ( ask the someone in the store to get them for you) drop a few in the tank and let it sit for about 30 mins. Do not be
concerned if your water is cloudy. After that is done you may put the fish back in the tank.

Yes, you can. However a goldfish tends to make the water cloudy. Also, the tank must be oxygenated if there is to be a tropical fish.
