I think your "illegal, may have salmonella" turtles are RES (Red eared sliders). They are diurnal species, meaning they sleep at night and awake in the day time.

Your young RES will sleep in water at night and sometimes in the daytime when they are basking, they will take a nap. This is very common for turtles to nap when basking. Hatchling turtles, like human babies, need more sleep and they tend to dose off more while basking.

It's quite normal. So, how much do they slee? At night, they'll sleep 6-9 hours and day time, 30-60 minute naps are normal and they may take a couple naps each day.

got to this site http://www.snapfish.com/viewsinglevote/contestname=My+Little+Ogre/contestentryoid=1147531/a=97134072

If this is the type of turtle you have it is a red eared slider(RES). Mine seems to be awake when it is light, and asleep when it is dark. If it seems to be sleeping more than normal it may be sick.

As to the may have salmonella, make sure you wash your hands after you play with it, and don't put it in your mouth. If you follow these rules you should not get sick.

The species would be helpful- probably a Red-ear Slider.

They sleep a chunk, but to be happy, healthy, and active, they need a few basics:
- Big water space, at leat 10 gallons, but 20 would be a lot better.
- Water heated to 75-80F
- Water well-filtered
- Good, safe basking site, heated to about 90F
- Right diet.

Depends on the turtle. Don't be freakin out if he goes under water and sleeps. They do this.

I have one adult and 3 babies...The adult is up alot. My babies seem to sleep at night when their light is off.
