It so happens in MIDnight if there has been some rain cloud or a dust cloud in the air on that day.
The water particles of the air condense on the dust particles letting light form The moon or other source refract and reflect to form a glow which is like a glow after the sun has set The light is a very diffused and soft one in such cases.

It would depend on where you are located. If you live far north (50° north latitude or more), it could be the "midnight sun" just below the horizon. It could be light pollution from a city in that direction. I live in the country, but see "light domes" from three towns each about 50 km away from me.

Well, if you are close to the Arctic Circle, the sun is just below the horizon at this time of year. In effect, you are seeing a sunset at midnight.

When the Sun is low in the sky it has to travel through a denser atmosphere..that in turn absorbs all light except the orange

that's a good question. usually you see the horizon change colors form the reflection of the sun when it's setting or when sawn is approaching. Maybe it was the reflection from the moon are gases in the air.

Are you near a city/town? It could be from another city. What direction where you facing? It could be a number of thins such as the moon or possible if close enough north it could be northern lights.
