for every kind of file i'd try to save it as, it keeps telling me the file type is unknown. i'm kind of desperate for this to work because i really like everything else about it. if you don't have any idea how to fix this problem, a suggestion for another photo editing freeware program that works possibly better (?) would be great!

well duh. for those of you who think im a NOOB, and don't know HOW to save, i do. thats not the problem. it WON'T save. i can't save as jpg, .psd, .xcf, or ANYTHING. don't be rude, please. if you don't want to answer, that's fine.

Actually this drove me nuts for a little bit but when you type in the filename be sure you INCLUDE the extension.
thisphoto.jpg not just thisphoto then be sure you set the correct extension as well.
Is that the issue? You also need to be sure you are in a writeable directory. If not you may need to re-instal the package.

what a noob...... you gotta go to file>Save>and look for Select File Type (By Extension)>and click JPEG image

If you use "Save As..", it should give you a dropdown list of possible file types you can use. What were you tring to save them as?
