I would suggest first going to a animal shelter with guinea pigs in residence. Shelters tend to have a cheaper care cost for guinea pigs, and they are usually healthier. If you go to a pet store, the guinea pig will probably be $30 and have mites or URI, which will be costly at the vet's office. You will also need to provide them with formulated guinea pig pellets, hay, water, and fresh vegetables daily.

I'm also going to suggest that you try to find two guinea pigs to keep as pets becuase they are normally herd animals and do much better in groups. A way that you can save money is by building a C&C cage for them. They are much more affordable than pet store cages and are easier to clean. I'll give you the links below.

Depending where you live how much it will cost. I have seen them for $20 up to $40 a piggy. I have also bought from a breeder and only cost me $8 per piggy. So I would say from a breeder would be cheaper. Also piggies from a breeder are healthier and well taken care of. If you go to the petstore look for signs such as the ears having bite marks or chunks missing. Also they do better in pairs because when you are not around they still have someone to play with. Also when they first come to your home they are really scared so they have someone that they know from wherever you got the piggies from.

They cages you buy are ok but the piggy needs room to play and run around. The bigger the better. I made mine from the tips from this site http://www.guineapigcages.com/ They have great tips on making a cage and alot of tips on taking care of the piggy. I made one of these for about the same price as the cages in the store but have 2 to 3 times the room to play and live in.

What you will need to make a cage is Coroplast. Coroplast can be bought at any local sign shop. Also Metal Cubes you can buy these at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, or any other type of stores like these. The Coroplast cost me about $15 for a full sheet. The Metal Cubes cost me about $10-15 a box. You will also need zip ties to help hold the Metal Cubes. When you build your own cage they have more room to live and play. You also can add on when you get the money. You can make it wider or even build upward a second floor. You can make the second floor the living area and they would have the bottom floor for play room.

Also if you are going to get a piggy or 2 please make sure you have time for them. Also it would be best to buy everything for your piggy before you get one or two. That way once they are home you can put them into the cage and let them be for the first 2 or 3 days to get use to where they are. Sights, sounds, and smells. Then reach in and pet your piggy if they run off don't make them come back out they are not ready. Just take your hand out of the cage and try again 15 to 30 mins later until they come to you. If this happens for a day or two and they don't come to you try holding a veggie or fruit and let them eat it from your hand. Then after a few days for them eating from your hand in their cage then pick them up and hold them for about 15 mins for 2 or 3 days then add up to 5 mins for every 2 to 3 days. Good Luck with your new Guinea Pig(s)

A guinea pig costs about $20-30. The cage about $30-50. You also have to buy it food, pine shavings, hay and treats, a water and food dish, and some toys. So, you're looking at approximately $150 to get started. Keep in mind that you'll have to take it o the vet if it gets sick. Pets are lovely and a great addition to any family, but they can also be expensive so prepare yourself for the cost.

Please check the shelters. And of course being the Chesapeake Guinea Pig Rescue we are always looking for homes. Are you in the Tidewater area?
