an El Nino is just a warm water current off the coast of Mexico, and around the equator, La Nina are a cooler current of water near the equator, these both factor into the weather patterns for almost all of the world. Southern oscillation it just the direction of water flow in the southern hemisphere. It flows counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere, and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

El Nino is called Little Chrst Child, and begins off the Coast of Peru, the temperatures of the waters there begins to warm 3-4 degrees above the normal. Fishermen there first notice this when the fishing in that area drys up.
