Definitely don't try to do it alone, make plenty of posters and hang them around the area you live in, maybe even put an ad in the local paper if you can...and then either set everything up the day before and cover it all up with tarps or wake up really early the next morning set up but I will warn you most people who go to the garage/yard sales get started at about 6am so you want to have yours set up as early as possible, make sure you have the prices for everything clearly marked and be willing to haggle prices somewhat and you should have a successful garage sale.

if by "perfect" you mean it looks nice or goes well then arranging and tagging and balloons and advertising everywhere and in the newspapers will do the trick.
If by "perfect" you mean it goes well enough to make you money (profit) then it's just luck. If you're lucky enough to be selling what other people want, need, or are drawn to because of the cheap price or because they think it is an antique, they could add something to their collection, then you are in luck and can pull in a couple of hundred dollars.
These days though it's difficult to make money by a garage sale because people can buy new things cheaply in the stores from china cheaper than they can buy your used items.
And, in fact, the same thing happens on eBay.
What I've done instead is exchange things with relatives, or pass things down, or take items to the Salvation Army or other same type organization, or touch base with neighbors.
Sometimes organizations have a garage sale and therefore mark the prices up higher and people don't mind giving the extra money cause they know their donation will go to a worthy cause. Sometimes too there is a "block" garage sale where you get to meet and talk with your neighbors on the block while other neighbors buy your stuff. Some allow you to bring your own table, or just put stuff out in the garage or on the cement and people go by and look. The important thing is to get your signs posted in places where it will assuredly bring in lookers and buyers, and list what you are selling.

1. Advertise. Make up some fliers and do a letter drop within a 5 mile radius...use the local paper as well.
2. Label everything clearly, and be prepared to drop your prices. You may get offended at what some people offer you, but it's better off being sold than back in your cupboard.
3. Have plenty of change. The day before, get a heap of coin and small notes and have them handy. Get someone to bring you lunch and drinks, never leave your stuff unattended.
Unfortunately, with garage sales, you have to treat your stuff with indifference, and thats hard if you've had something for 10 years. It is rewarding at the end to see the money you've made, but sometimes sad to see possessions go. Good luck!!

First answer good. People steal.
Have plenty of change for $10 & $20. $1 and $5 and coins.
I use those round Stickers and price everything so people not have to keep asking how much.
Be willing to come down. This what makes it fun for people. Asking for a lesser price.
Have evrything up on tables so it easy to look at. Large things like tables and lawnmowers go on the ground.
Sometimes an Ice Chest with just bottled water for 50 cents, just get your money back on this.
