It's purdy competitive. Ya gotta be DARNED good, and THEN ya gotta getcher name passed around! Two BIG obstacles right there! Think you're good now? Yeah, I thought I was, too. Find out some truly heavy duty pro website names and go look. You may well be taken aback, and groan. I was. And these folks are somewhat, just somewhat, unknown except for locally.

Manufacturers "make" products, Business' who have employees, "buy" these products from the manufacturer and sell them to "customers." Although this sounds a little vague, if somewhere in the middle of this process you feel that you can help make this company, or, manufacturer, more success full, then hang out you shingle on a web page and go-for-it.
As a freelance developerr, when you do get a project be sure that it has a (this-much) and (no-more) statement in it. That way you can develop a website that will do only so much and your (client) can't lock you up day after day with petty modifications. Example (Could you add this paragraph to page two?) or can we tone down the color on the complete website, etc...
I wish you all the luck in the world, and to answer you question, yes it very easy to find work as a freelance web designer.
One recommendation that I would make and I hope you would consider is to develope a team of designers.
Hope this helps!

Finding clients when you are new to the biz is hard.
Meeting their expectations is harder.
Keeping up with emerging techs and security issues is hardest.
Add to the above, the usual challenges to running your own business: accounting, tax prep, advertising, customer support, health insurance costs, retirement plans (dream on), etc.
It is a cut throat biz and becoming more so every day. If you enjoy web dev, just get a web dev job with a real company. Or make your mom proud and just go to law/med school and forget all about this.
