The west coast of America has a series of mountain ranges which extend all the way to the ocean. There are a few excepions to this rule... Plains and valleys reach the shore at San Diego, Los Angeles, the San Francisco bay and Puget Sound. At all these places, large population centers have developed, aided by the trans-continental rail services, which were vital to communication before the advent of commercial aviation after WWII. The California coast between San Diego and Los Angeles, between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and north of San Francisco are not hosts to large population centers, as is the case of the Oregon and Washington coasts, south of Seattle. There's no room to put a large city, and no way to easily move commerce and traffic in and out.

Probably because of the crappy weather and rugged coastline. The Oregon coast is one of the wettest places on Earth.

I've heard that they don't encourage people to move to Oregon because they like things they way they are. It's probably not true but it is said there are signs at the border that say WELCOME TO OREGON. ENJOY YOUR VISIT BUT PLEASE DON'T TRY TO MOVE HERE.

well, the geography might not be suitable for large cities. also, storms might be too powerful there, but thats a good question regardless.

There's really nothing much there to attract a large population center.
